Doctor Sleep Review

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

Doctor sleep is a 2019 horror film directed by Mike Flanagan and stars Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson. The film is based on the book of the same name by horror author Stephen King and in turn is a sequel both the film adaption and 1977 novel of King's "The Shining. The film follows Danny Torrance 39 years after the events of The Shining. Soon after batting an alcohol addiction, Danny finds himself trying to save a young girl (who also can shine) from an evil cult called True Knot led by Rose The Hat.

Having Been a big fan of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" and of film Director Mike Flanagan after seeing his 2013 horror film "Oculus". I was very excited to hear that he would be directing an adaption of King's sequel novel "Doctor Sleep". After seeing the trailer I was excited but also felt that it didn't have the same feel as Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece (with it being a continuation of the adaption) however after seeing the full film at the cinema I can say with confidence that it was a great and enjoyable horror/thriller. The acting from both Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson are great and the film doesn't rely on cheap jump scares instead building atmosphere and the characters to give off the horror.

The film uses elements previously seen from the 1980 film adaption of The Shining while also mixing in the novels key moments.

In conclusion, the film surprised me on how good it turned out. Yes the tune didn't fit with "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick but I don't think it was meant to. it clearly wanted to pay homage to the horror masterpiece while coming up with it's own ideas which I feel helped the film become in it's own.

9/10
